I did this trip straight after visiting Skylodge Adventure Suites—you can read that blog here. After climbing up a sheer rock face and sleeping in a glass pod suspended over a valley, I was more than ready for something a little more relaxed. And what better way to recover than aboard one of the world’s most luxurious sleeper trains?
There are luxury trains, and then there are bucket-list-worthy luxury trains. If you’re a fan of high-end rail travel, you’ve probably heard of the Four Seasons Train in Japan, the iconic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, the extravagant Maharajas' Express in India, and, of course, the legendary Royal Rajasthan on Wheels. But the Belmond Andean Explorer is in a league of its own—an opulent, rolling five-star hotel that takes you through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Peru.
I didn't really have any expectations since I'd never been on a luxury train before. However, based on personal recommendations and watching hundreds of YouTube videos, I was definitely excited!
The adventure began in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, where we boarded the Belmond Andean Explorer—only a 10 to 15-minute drive from JW Marriott Cusco.
Before boarding, we were checked in right on the platform and welcomed with refreshing drinks. The setting was already surreal, with the train gleaming in the Peruvian sunlight, and a traditional Peruvian folk band playing live music, dressed in vibrant, authentic attire. It felt like stepping into a scene from an old-world luxury travel film.
We took some time to snap photos of the train, soak in the atmosphere, and then we were guided to our cabins.
Temperature & Weather: Expect daytime temperatures between 10°C and 20°C, with dry, sunny days and cold nights—so layering up is key!
As the train slowly made its way through the Andean highlands, we were treated to panoramic views of mountains, rolling plains, and picturesque villages. The observation car at the back of the train was the perfect place to take it all in, with an open-air deck where we could breathe in the crisp Andean air.
The train offers private excursions at every stop, and we took full advantage of them. Some highlights included:
Every time we returned to the train, champagne was waiting (yes, free-flow alcohol throughout the journey). The service was flawless, with wet towels handed to us upon every return from an excursion. It truly redefined luxury travel.
But the absolute highlight? Watching an active volcano erupt in the distance—an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime moment. The landscapes we passed were untouched, with areas inaccessible by car or foot. This is the kind of adventure that makes travel magical.
The food on board was nothing short of exceptional. Every meal was a gourmet dining experience, showcasing the finest Peruvian cuisine. Think fresh ceviche, quinoa-stuffed peppers, and alpaca tenderloin, all paired with world-class wines.
Because the itinerary is packed with adventure, everything runs like clockwork. Meals are structured, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner as sit-down affairs, typically in formal or smart attire. While some food options are available 24/7, the main meals are an experience in themselves.
The bar car was equally impressive, serving up bespoke cocktails and endless glasses of champagne throughout the journey. The open-air car provided the perfect setting to unwind, with live music adding to the elegant atmosphere.
And let’s not forget the afternoon tea service, which felt like something straight out of a Wes Anderson film—immaculately presented, sophisticated, and a true highlight of the journey. The service was impeccable, exactly what you’d expect from a five-star establishment.
The cabins were an experience in themselves—elegant, cosy, and equipped with en-suite bathrooms. Waking up to the sight of the Andes passing by my window was surreal.
Each night, I fell asleep to the gentle rocking of the train, a first for me, but something I could definitely get used to!
The spa was another unexpected delight—imagine getting a relaxing massage while a scenic landscape unfolds outside your window. Absolutely unreal.
One of the most peaceful moments of the trip was watching the landscapes change from rugged mountains to secluded stretches of stunning natural beauty, far away from any city noise.
The cost? A cool USD 7,100.00 (S/. 26,355.20) for 2 people —and every penny was worth it. This price includes all meals, unlimited drinks (yes, including alcohol), guided excursions, and luxury accommodations on board.
While it may seem steep, when you factor in the unparalleled comfort, exclusive experiences, and five-star service, it’s actually exceptional value for money.
The train itself is pure elegance, combining classic 1920s charm with modern luxury. The interiors feel like a high-end boutique hotel, with beautifully designed lounge areas, plush seating, and panoramic windows showcasing the breathtaking Andean landscapes.
The cabins were nothing short of spectacular. Each room featured luxurious bedding, an en-suite bathroom with premium toiletries, and personalised service. You even have a dedicated attendant who ensures your journey is seamless, from turn-down service to keeping your glass full.
If you ever have the chance to take the Belmond Andean Explorer, do it. This train is more than just a mode of transport—it’s a luxury experience that immerses you in the magic of Peru. From start to finish, everything was flawlessly executed, making it one of the most mesmerising trips of my life.
Stay tuned for my next adventure, where I take you to the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, an iconic luxury retreat in Iguassu Falls National Park. From stunning waterfall views to my exhilarating skydive over the falls, this is a journey filled with pure adrenaline and breathtaking scenery. If you love a mix of luxury and adventure, you won’t want to miss this one!
